We are looking for a Fire Tower Operator to help us with the early detection of fires within OneFortyOne forest plantations, and the communities and land surrounding them.

As a member of the fire operations team Fire Tower Operators provide a vital link in the early detection and monitoring of fires to determine location, size, direction and fire behaviour, and report to the fire tower base.

Ideally you will:

  • have an interest in map reading and navigation.
  • able to locate fires using compass bearings and distance estimates
  • be able to read weather monitoring devises and understand fire weather characteristics.
  • confidence in operating two-way radios and communications equipment.
  • have the highest regard for safety.
  • be comfortable working at heights and in isolated locations in all weather conditions.
  • be able work well autonomously and unsupervised.

The fire season runs from November through to April requiring Fire Tower Operators to be available over a 7-day roster, with days/hours dependent on weather conditions. All required training will be provided including accredited training in Work safely at heights.

This role also requires you be physically fit, pass a pre-employment medical/functional capacity and fitness assessment, have or ability to pass working at heights training, have a current driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation suitable for commuting to tower locations.  Base hourly rate of $36.89 (includes 25% casual loading) + penalty rates for overtime, weekends, public holidays.

Our number one priority is to prevent fire impacting our forests and communities in the first place. If that’s not possible, we must ensure our response is swift and effective. To do this, we work on fire prevention year-round. We provide training and strive to prepare our people and our forests as best we can.
