Our Green Triangle Forests Estate is one of the largest and longest established sustainably managed Forest Estate in South Australia.  We are looking for a Fire Tower Base Operator to help us with the early detection of fires within OneFortyOne and Green Triangle Forest plantations, and the communities and land surrounding them.

The Role:

As a member of the fire operations team the Fire Tower Base Operator works within the Fire Response Team and assists with a range of fire preparedness activities with a focus on the operation of the Green Triangle fire tower base. You will also:

  • support and communicate with Fire Tower operators who provide a vital connection in the early discovery and monitoring of fires to determine location, size, direction and fire behaviour.   
  • monitor the safety and wellbeing of fire tower operators and team members at commencement, during and at conclusion of shifts.
  • communicate with fire incident control, and record, collate and report the relevant information to the Regional Duty Officer, forest owners and relevant stakeholders.
  • assist with coordination of internal and external training delivery for tower operators, logistics and fire teams.
  • support and assist with operational tasks and administration duties, using established systems and processes.

You:

  • have a strong commitment to safety and wellbeing, supporting our goal of ensuring everyone goes Home Safe and Well.
  • have relevant experience in fire response, firefighting/ supervision, or emergency services operations, preferably within the forestry industry.
  • have an interest in map reading and navigation and be able to locate fires using compass bearings and distance estimates.
  • are able to read weather monitoring devices and understand fire weather characteristics
  • have experience and confidence in operating two-way radios and communications equipment, and various IT systems and technology application, including FireWeb or similar.   
  • be able work well autonomously and unsupervised when required.

This role also requires you to pass a pre-employment medical/functional capacity evaluation and a fitness assessment. The fire season runs from November through to April requiring availability over a 7-day roster, with days/hours dependent on weather conditions and fire ratings. Base hourly rate of $45.00 (includes 25% casual loading) + penalty rates for overtime, weekends, public holidays. The successful applicant must be available to commence in late October or early November in preparation for the Fire season.
