What Levi loves about the forest…

Levi, Year 8
Tenison Woods College – Poplars Middle School

WINNER Secondary School Category

I like looking for animals in the forests and swamps. We had Brolgas nest in a swamp near our farm this year for the 1st time in 2 years as last year was to dry for them. I see lots of kangaroos with joeys but it’s uncommon to see wallaby joeys. Its been a good year for the Emus as we have seen 3 lots of chicks this year so far in the forests near to our farm.

I help out with SEAC and I like watching the Rally Cars compete in the forests and I operate the timing clocks to start the cars and send them into the forest tracks. Its great having a sausage and hear the cars racing up and down the pine breaks and seeing their headlights flash around. After a rally Dad and I use the same maps the cars had and drive around to see where the cars raced. Watching the harvesters work and listening to the trees crash as they get cut down is aways great. The trees don’t look heavy while they are standing but make the ground thud and when they hit the deck.

OneFortyOne acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their deep connections to land, water, and community. We pay our respect to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all First Nations people today.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori communities have a strong spiritual connection between people and the land – the wellbeing of one sustains the wellbeing of the other. We strive to build meaningful relationships with iwi as tangata whenua (people of the land/region), to be responsible intergenerational kaitiaki (stewards/guardians) of the land where our forests grow.
