What Darcy loves about the forest…

Darcy, Year 11
Grant High School – Independent Learning Centre

Growing up I was surrounded by the forest; my grandparents owned a farm that had the forest around it. My brother and I were always in the forest making teepees and all sorts of things.

The forest has always been an important part of my life. It’s important to me that we protect the nature and wildlife from not just wildfires but other issues like pollution, littering, overhunting and many other issues.

I try to recycle as much as I can and be as environmentally friendly as possible. I enjoy spotting animals, insects and interesting plants and I love listening to the rain. The forest feels like a peaceful escape from busy life, and I find comfort in the steady rhythm of nature.

OneFortyOne acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their deep connections to land, water, and community. We pay our respect to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all First Nations people today.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori communities have a strong spiritual connection between people and the land – the wellbeing of one sustains the wellbeing of the other. We strive to build meaningful relationships with iwi as tangata whenua (people of the land/region), to be responsible intergenerational kaitiaki (stewards/guardians) of the land where our forests grow.
